HC SKA ABOUT THE CLUB

SKA Ice Hockey Club of Saint Petersburg, Russia,

was founded in 1946. The club has participated in the top national championship almost every year since the 1946/1947 season, only missing out for the 1947/1948, 1949/1950 and 1991/1992 seasons.

 

Club honours:

 

Two time bronze medallist of the USSR Championship in 1971 and 1987

 

Semi-finalist of the Youth Hockey League Cup in 1994

 

Finalist of the USSR Cup in 1968 and 1971

 

Nine time winner of the Armed Forces Cup

 

Four time winner of the Spengler Cup in 1970, 1971, 1977 and 2010

 

Winner of the Continental Cup in 2013

 

Bronze medallist of the KHL in 2013

 

SKA has always been a club which has some of the best players in the world, and several have competed in world championships as well as Olympic Games. Here is a list of SKA players who have become champions of the world while being registered as a player of our club:

 

Yevgeni Belosheikin, Svyatoslav Khalizov, Sergey Pushkov, Sergey Shendelev, Maxim Shushinsky, Dmitriy Kalinin, Viktor Tikhonov, Maxim Chudinov, Vadim Shipachyov, Anton Belov.

 

To add to this, a large amount of SKA players have won the World Junior Championship with Russia, and back in 1959, the SKA youth team won the USSR Championship. SKA at the moment has two adjoining clubs which compete in the VHL and MHL. SKA-Karelia, the official SKA farm club competes in the VHL, whereas SKA-1946, our youth team, takes part in the MHL.

 

NHL star Ilya Kovalchuk signed for SKA permanently in 2013, and he straight away became the captain of the team. During the NHL lockout of 2012, Vezina Trophy winner Sergey Bobrovsky also played for our club, as well as Vladimir Tarasenko. While these players are now back in the NHL, Ilya Kovalchuk is tied down to a four year contract with SKA.

 

SKA is a club which always strives to be the best, and such a winning mentality has attracted many more fans, with the club having one of the highest average attendances not only in the KHL, but in Europe.
